GlobalPost is an acclaimed international news site with outstanding original reporting from country-based journalists in all regions of the world. The New York Times notes GlobalPost as “offering a mix of news and features that only a handful of other news organizations can rival”. As a purely online media outlet with international reach, GlobalPost can offer its advertisers a unique digital environment that unites exclusive and relevant news content with corporate brand goals. When Shell Oil signed on to sponsor a micro-site about emerging alternative energy solutions, GlobalPost turned to One Pica to build a custom video experience called Energy Entrepreneurs that is both engaging and educational.
In an effort to bring awareness to creative forms of new energy, GlobalPost journalists are filming innovators on every continent who are determined to construct efficient and effective energy solutions for their communities. From affordable DIY wind and sun hybrid generators in Mexico, to fuel created from the combustible smoke of burning rice husks in India, the Energy Entrepreneur videos are newsworthy and create context for the global community’s effort to identify and implement renewable energy sources in a scalable way.
Debuting with just three of the 25 videos that will eventually be completed by year’s end, the site posed a creative challenge as well as a technical challenge: with limited content at launch, how do you create enough interest to keep viewers coming back for more?
In our creative execution, we aligned GlobalPost’s and Shell Oil’s desire to combine traditional journalistic values and the power of new media to inspire the world to harness green power. The micro-site uses an innovative Flash 3D interface to present the videos in a custom player that showcases each story, individual and country of origin. It is effortless to navigate with simple but elegant tools to filter stories by region, energy type or date; color-coded renewable energy icons and brilliant graphic images draw visitors into the viewing experience. We delivered an interactive design that is as fun as it is functional, allowing viewers to move and drag the video boxes with their mouse to see what’s new and what’s “coming soon”. This surprising and unusual user experience encourages exploration and return visits.
