Crumbs Bake Shop Expands Into The Washington Market

The New York company that claims to have started the gourmet cupcake craze is staking a claim in the Washington market.

Crumbs Bake Shop says it will open its first Washington-area locations in March, with stores in Georgetown, Cleveland Park, Foggy Bottom, Rockville, Clarendon and Reston.

"The D.C. market was the next logical choice for our expansion," said CEO Jason Bauer. "The Crumbs brand has strong name recognition in the market, and we decided to listen to our fans who have been asking us for many months to come to D.C."

Bauer and his wife, Mia, founded Crumbs, opening their first bakery on Manhattan's Upper West Side in 2003. There are now 18 locations on the East Coast and five on the West Coast.

The stores feature more than 50 different kinds of cupcakes.
